A force of nature

R.M. Williams present Autumn Winter 2019 // Inspired by artist Russell Drysdale

26 February 2019

Inspired by the art of Russell Drysdale; one of Australia’s foremost modernist painters, R.M. Williams release their Autumn Winter '19 collection 'A force of nature'.

Drysdale’s revolutionary post-war work forged a new image of the Australian outback; His visions of outlying structures, gnarled and twisted trees, barren hills and solid, isolated figures represent the endurance of both Australia’s landscape and its inhabitants.

Focused on a range of outback subjects: Drover’s wives, station hands, farmers, children playing, Indigenous groups and main street towns, Drysdale also found a character in the landscape itself: red and brown skies, pools of black shadows, dusty earth, ancient rock formations and barren trees both house and protect their inhabitants. And the collection’s palette take their cues from the warm saturated tones of his paint: washed black, deep indigo and airforce blue, emerald, tobacco, redwood, oak, russet, oxblood, antique ruby, dusty cedar and dark ochre.

The Autumn Winter 2019 campaign was shot, with this inspiration also at top of mind, in Australia’s Mungo National Park, a World Heritage site in south-western New South Wales. Rich in Aboriginal history, with undisturbed landforms that span thousands of years, are akin to the unique and barren landscapes that Drysdale depicted.

The introduction of the 'Signature Collection' of men and women’s leather bags is new this season. For men it includes a classic overnight bag, messenger bag and briefcase. While the women’s range contains completely new shapes and designs with a stylish saddle bag, tote bag, bucket bag and clutch. Such classic silhouettes remains true to the RM Williams heritage with detailing from the archive.

The collection also introduces a new men’s boot: the 'Sturt' desert boot, a lace-up style in suede with stitch-down crepe sole. Alongside the iconic Rickaby boots have been crafted in performance leather, tanned here in New Zealand.  Within the women’s line, the Mila boot has been updated in black with a natural sole in a shrunken-grain kangaroo, tanned in Queensland. And the Eden buckle boot, built on from the best-selling Adelaide style adds a DNA-rich style to the collection.

R.M. Williams continues to draw inspiration from the brand’s archive, with heritage inspired leather at the heart of the season. Hero pieces include a classic Dark-tan tumbled calf zip-through jacket, a timeless statement, while the iconic Rider Jacket has been reinterpreted in a luxurious sheepskin shearling.
